The perfect mix of breaks, warm keys and catchy vocals have ensured that Baby D's "Let Me Be Your Fantasy" always scores highly in polls of 90's dance anthems, and with the Dope Ammo and DJ Hybrid drum & bass remix on the cusp of release you can be sure to be hearing it a whole lot more at parties over the coming months.
For Dee Fearon - vocalist at the heart of Baby D - the party hasn't stopped, performing at old skool events and dance festivals around the globe week in, week out. Having caught her high-energy set at last year's Lazy Sunday Festival it's clear she still loves performing and interacting with the crowd, making herself available to fans both before and after the gig for selfies galore.
We were fortunate enough to be able to catch up with Dee at the Lazy Sunday gig where she agreed to answer a few questions on the old skool revival scene and some of her biggest hits...
It was through Production House that I had my first experiences of the rave scene. The label was making all kinds of dance tunes as the rave scene was evolving. Before that I was always a party goer and my usual favourite venues were the soul, jazz-funk or reggae ones.
Yes, there's been a massive resurgence - it's keeping me well busy! I think many people who grew up partying through that time have maybe found a bit of freedom again after bringing up families and it was also such a very special and unique time in dance music that deserves to be revisited.
Yes, I do get to meet a lot of other artists from back in the day. I have huge respect for Rozalla, Sonique, Altern 8, Liquid, Ratpack, Slipmatt, N-trance, Pied Piper, Shades of Rythm, 2 Bad Mice and others of that quality who are still out there doing great things.
The original release of 'Fantasy' was through Production House records. It went to number 1 in the dance charts and stayed in the lower regions of the national charts for 2 years. Production House didn't have the ability to finance a huge record but this prompted London/Systematic Records to step in and take it to the next level.
Speechless and flabbergasted! I still look back to that time and it feels surreal!
Apart from the obvious huge tunes I love some tracks on the Deliverance album like "Nature’s Warning" because it allowed me to perform a different vocal approach. We also did "Euphoria" featuring Nino which is such a banging tune that you can really let your hair down too.
There are several tunes from back in the day that I love but if I had my own private rave party it would definitely include 'Insomnia', 'On a Ragga Tip' and 'Firestarter'.
Because my love of music is so vast, I really couldn't specify, but artists like Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind and Fire, Tina Marie... they're all legends. And more recent artists such as Amy Winehouse, Adele, Ed Sheeran, James Morrison, Disclosure, Sam Smith and Chronix are all up there for me in melodic goose-bumping music. This could be a very long list if I really got carried away!
The crowd singing back at you is just simply the best! There is no feeling like it, it just warms the soul! Then meeting people afterwards, hearing their stories of what the tracks meant to them back in the day and genuinely feeling the love. And having lots of hugs and selfies!
I feel so blessed to still be doing what I do after all this time and for the 90s resurgence to be back with a vengeance! It's been so full on these recent years and I've been constantly on the road, so it really is just performing here there and everywhere! Whenever I do get a chance for a break I absolutely adore being with my family, my kids and my newly-born first granddaughter who is a absolutely adorable! My name Baby D came from my love of babies so I'm in my element!
