The '90s were a golden age for rave culture - a chaotic, sweaty, euphoric explosion of sound and subculture. We all know the anthems: "Sweet Harmony", "On a Ragga Tip", "Hardcore Heaven"… but what about the ones that lit up the dancefloor but might have been forgotten?

This list isn’t about the obvious. It’s a love letter to the tunes that deserve more airtime, the ones that still light up dancefloors (or headphones) decades later. Some you might remember, some you might have missed, but all of them are absolute belters.

1. Cloud 9 – “You Got Me Burnin’” (1993)

A hardcore tune that has it all - deep pads, catchy vocal samples, stomping kickdrums and that beautiful head-nodding breakbeat. The sort of tune you’d expect to hear in a sweaty warehouse filled with white gloves and whistles!

2. Foul Play – “Being With You” (1994)

You can’t talk hidden gems without tipping your hat to Foul Play. This is jungle-meets-soul at its finest. Smooth, rolling, and utterly captivating. It never quite hit the mainstream, but it should’ve been huge.

3. DJ Seduction – “Sub Dub” (1992)

An underrated Seduction banger that leans heavier into dubby elements than his usual piano-led anthems. It’s dark, moody, and built for bass bins - and when that vocal drops... pure unadulterated bliss!

4. Hyper On Experience – “Assention” (1993)

Bonkers in all the best ways. Twisted samples, off-kilter drum edits, and synths that feel like they were beamed in from another galaxy. A criminally slept-on piece of brain-melting hardcore.

5. Liquid Crystal – “You Got Me” (1993)

This one’s a deep cut from NRG. A gorgeous blend of melancholic melody and gnarly jungle breaks. If you ever needed proof that hardcore could be beautiful, this is it - proper hands-in-the air piano vibes.

6. Tango & Ratty – “Final Conflict” (1994)

Not quite as well-known as “The Killer”, but arguably just as deadly. Tough, uncompromising, and dripping with atmosphere. A proper heads-down roller with one of the catchiest snare patterns and darkest synth sections.

7. Nebula II – “Flatliners” (1993)

A slice of proto-darkcore that still slaps. The eerie samples and brutal kickdrums are pure horror rave. A track that terrified and thrilled in equal measure, alongside it's equally brilliant B-side. When the rave piano kicks in at half speed and gradually builds up... pure hardcore brilliance!

8. Mega City 2 – “Darker Side of Evil” (1993)

This track certainly doesn’t woo you with melody - it unsettles you with mood. With its oppressive samples and industrial edge, this is grimy, atmospheric, darkside hardcore at its best. The samples from Hellraiser and Predator II provide a real menacing edge.

9. DJ Rap & Outlaw Candy – “Intelligent Woman” (1995)

Overshadowed by bigger Rap anthems like “Spiritual Aura”, but this one’s a gem. Smooth, clever, and showcases why she was one of the true pioneers of the scene. This is an absolute jungle belter.

10. The Criminal Minds – “Baptised by Dub” (1992)

Okay, this one nearly broke through, but still doesn’t get the credit it deserves. A masterclass in early jungle/hip-hop crossover. Dub, breaks, ragga… it’s all in there and got majot airtime at Fantazia Summertime in 1992.

Final thoughts…

Hidden gems like these are the heart and soul of the rave scene. They might not have topped the charts, but they left a mark on dancefloors, bedroom decks, mixtapes, and pirate radio forever.

Leave a comment/message on the socials and let me know which ones you remember - or which ones I’ve criminally missed off. There are so many more. Maybe it’s time for Part 2…
